Case Study: Gardens on the Edge, Rocky Ledge

Service: Garden Design & Installation
Goal: Create a new landscape that reflects and honors the rocky ledge while establishing multiple garden beds designed for years of beauty, biodiversity, and seasonal interest

This project began with one of Maine’s most defining landscapes — a rugged, rocky ledge.

Set among the rocky ledges so common in Maine, this garden began as a challenge of terrain and turned into a celebration of place. The homeowners wanted a landscape that would soften the stone, welcome pollinators, and provide color and texture through the seasons without disturbing the natural character of the site.

Design Approach

We designed a series of curved, terraced beds that echo the contours of the ledge itself. Each bed was built from natural materials that harmonize with the granite tones and offer improved soil depth for a diverse range of plants. Our planting plan combined hardy perennials, ornamental shrubs, and small trees chosen for their ability to thrive in well-drained, sun-exposed conditions. Using our 3-D garden design software, the homeowners could visualize each planting zone, view bloom progressions, and even take a virtual walk-through of the proposed space before installation began.

Results

The finished landscape feels both intentional and organic — a tapestry of color and texture that reflects and honors the rocky ledge while opening multiple garden beds for years of beauty, biodiversity, and enjoyment. Over time, the plantings will mature into a dynamic habitat supporting pollinators, birds, and seasonal interest, transforming what was once a stark ledge into a living expression of Maine’s natural resilience.
